He is seen as a stylistic innovator on the piano, and is thought to have created his own recognizable and unique style. “Jazziz Magazine” referred to him as “stunning in originality”. He was a long-time member of saxophonist Davis S. Ware band. He has recorded and performed with a plethora of musicians, including William Parker, DJ Spooky, Joe Morris, Daniel Carter, Roscoe Mitchell. In 2011 Shipp released an album entitled “Art of the Improviser”, enthusiastically received by music critics. Since 2011 he has been collaborating with Barbara Januszkiewicz, a conceptual visual artist, and together they are exploring new territories and working on interdisciplinary projects. In 2013 Shipp’s solo piano CD called “Piano Sutras” was released. Since 2015 he is the leader of the Mathew Shipp Trio, with bassist Michael Biso and percussionist Newman T. Baker.
